Scotland defeats Oman by an eight-wicket margin and qualifies for the Super 12s

On Thursday, Scotland beat Oman by eight wickets to advance to the second round of the T20 World Cup for the first time. The Scots comfortably chased down their 123-run mark with 18 balls to spare, claiming their third win in three qualifying matches. Despite receiving a terrible hit to his hand, Scotland captain Kyle Coetzer top-scored with 41 from 28 balls, including three sixes and two fours. Richie Berrington hit a big six to complete the game 31 not out. Matthew Cross (26) went undefeated as well. Scotland will compete in Super 12 Group 2 alongside Afghanistan, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, and the runners-up from qualifying Group A, which will most likely be Ireland or Namibia.

Bangladesh secured the second qualifying position in Group B by defeating Papua New Guinea by 84 runs after being upset by Scotland in their first encounter.

They’ll be in Group 1 with Australia, England, South Africa, West Indies, Sri Lanka, and one of Ireland or Namibia.

“What a day for Scottish cricket, the boys are excited,” said Josh Davey, who bagged 3-25 and was named man-of-the-match.

“It was a fantastic opportunity to demonstrate my abilities; we were fortunate, but I’ll take that any day of the week.”

“We have the belief, we’ve covered a lot of bases, and T20 is all about momentum, which we can handle.”

Scotland entered the 2021 tournament having never advanced past the first round in their previous three participation, winning only one of their seven games.

Oman was held to a total of 122 runs by Scotland.

Jatinder Singh was out second ball after a run-out mix-up left him and starter Aqib Ilyas at the same end for Oman, who had won the toss and elected to bat.

Ilyas went on to top score with 37 off 35 balls, but the home side was unable to break free from the Scottish bowling.

Only three hitters from Oman reached double digits.

Sri Lanka qualified from Group A on Wednesday, with either Ireland or Namibia joining them on Friday.
