After a heated exchange in a T20 World Cup match, Sri Lanka’s Lahiru Kumara and Bangladesh’s Liton Das were fined
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has fined Sri Lanka pacer Lahiru Kumara and Bangladesh opener Liton Das after the two collided during their T20 World Cup encounter in Sharjah on Sunday. After Kumara disqualified Liton in the early stages of the game, the two players had a heated exchange on Sunday. During the altercation, teammates had to separate the two. Liton was going away from the ground after losing his wicket when the event occurred. The International Cricket Council (ICC) has penalised Lahiru and Liton 25% and 15% of their match fees, respectively.
“Sri Lankan bowler Lahiru Kumara and Bangladeshi batter Liton Das Kumar were both fined for breaching level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel in the recently concluded Group B, Super 12 game of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 on Sunday in Sharjah,” the ICC said in a press release.
“Kumara was fined 25% of his match money and given one demerit point for his actions. Das was fined 15% of his match fee and given one demerit point, at this time,” the press announcement said.
“The sanctions were imposed by Javagal Srinath of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees and were ratified by the ICC Cricket Operations department in accordance with the COVID-19 interim playing regulations. There was no need for a formal hearing because Kumara and Das both pleaded guilty to the offences and accepted the suggested punishments.”
Sri Lanka went on to win the match by five wickets on Sunday. With seven balls to spare, the islanders chased down Bangladesh’s 172-run total.
