In support of Alia Bhatt’s Kanyadan, Shri Shri Ravishankar remarked, “A girl is not a thing to be donated.”

Sri Sri Ravishankar, the founder of The Art of Living and an Indian religious guru, has responded to Alia Bhatt’s ‘Kanyadaan’ advertising. Sri Sri Ravishankar has lent his support to Alia Bhatt’s advertising.
Sri Sri Ravishankar told Republic in an interview that a girl kid is not something that can be donated. Simultaneously, he expressed his viewpoint on Vedic practices. He also stated that the ‘Kanyadaan’ tradition should be abolished. In addition, he mentioned the old Vedic practice of ‘panigraha.’

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar stated in the same interview that there is no mention of anything like Kanyadan, particularly in the Shrutis. After that, it is retained in the Panigraha’s recollections, in which the hand is held. Panigraha is a Sanskrit term from the Vedas. Whether it’s the husband holding the wife, or the wife holding the husband, it has to be held hand in hand. In our Vedic cultural framework, gender equality is exceedingly high.

Many changes occurred throughout the decades, and Kanyadan was eventually incorporated into it. A girl is not an object that can be offered as a present. Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, on the other hand, claims that the notion and meaning of this age-old tradition have been corrupted over time.
According to sources, he said, “I’d always like to call it Panigraha,” referring to the father’s statement, “You take care of my daughter.” This is exactly what it means, but somewhere in the Middle Ages it was mocked as ‘charity.’ Kanyadaan, in my opinion, should be deleted. It will have no effect on our Vedic position, ideology, or philosophy if you remove it.
