Michael Hussey is “very optimistic” about Australia’s chances in the T20 World Cup
Michael Hussey’s country hasn’t won a T20 international series since February 2020, but the former Australia batter is bullish about the team’s chances at the World Cup in the shortest format. The first round matches of the event began on Sunday in Oman. Australia had lost five series to England, India, New Zealand, the West Indies, and Bangladesh before the finale. “In fact, I’m rather enthusiastic about Australia’s prospects. I believe we have a very good, potentially dangerous team. If they can build their confidence and adapt effectively to the environment, I believe they’ll be a very good squad. Hopefully, they’ll be able to hit their stride “foxsports.com.au quoted Hussey as saying.
The event will be placed in the United Arab Emirates and Oman, with the final planned for November 14 in Dubai.
Hussey heaped respect on all-rounder Glenn Maxwell, who shone for the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the just-concluded IPL in the United Arab Emirates.
Maxwell scored 513 runs in 15 matches at an average of 42.75 and a strike rate of 144.10, including six half-centuries.
“It’s been fascinating to observe him. He’s been on a roll lately. He’s been confident, and the good news is that he’s doing so in the UAE (he has performed). So, perhaps, he can continue his IPL form in the World Cup, as he’ll be a key element of the team.
“It’s a challenging role to play in the middle order in T20 cricket,” Hussey said. “But if you have someone who’s in great form and on top of their game, we’ve seen he can be a match-winner on his own.”
On October 23, Australia will kick off their Super 12 campaign in Abu Dhabi against South Africa.
