Michael Vaughan: Virat Kohli “Will See Himself As A Failure In IPL Captaincy”
Virat Kohli failed to win the Indian Premier League (IPL) trophy in his final season as captain of the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). On Monday, RCB lost by four wickets against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the IPL 2021 Eliminator. Kohli top-scored for his team with a 39 off 33 balls, but RCB could only manage 138 for seven in 20 overs. KKR achieved 139 for six in 19.4 overs, thanks to Sunil Narine’s inspiration. Former England captain Michael Vaughan said after the match that Kohli went “a long way short” during his time as RCB captain.
Vaughan, speaking to Cricbuzz after the game, stated, “In IPL cricket, his legacy as captain will be one of defeat. That’s what it’s all about, you know, high-level sport is all about crossing the finish line and winning trophies, especially when you’re at the level of Virat Kohli. I’m not saying he is, but since he is such a determined player and person, he will perceive himself as a failure in the IPL captaincy because he doesn’t have the trophy in his hands “, he said.
“Virat Kohli’s work with the Test squad and Test match cricket, as well as the development of the Indian Test match team, is outstanding. You’d have to admit and acknowledge that he has fallen far short in one-day and T20 cricket with the national team and with Royal Challengers Bangalore.”
RCB were well-prepared for IPL 2021, according to Vaughan, and possessed the ideal batting and bowling combination.
“The skill and teams he has to work with are among the greatest in the world. As a result, the RCB team’s batting lineup is particularly top-heavy. They had the bowling to match the batting this year, with the likes of Maxwell, Harshal Patel, and Yuzi Chahal, but they fell short “, he explained.
Virat Kohli is also expected to take aside as Team India’s T20 captain after the T20 World Cup, which begins on October 17 in the United Arab Emirates and Oman.
