Sarita Mor takes bronze at the World Wrestling Championships

Sarita Mor won the bronze medal in the 59kg category at the World Wrestling Championships on Thursday, defeating Sweden’s Johanna Lindborg. She is the sixth Indian woman wrestler to earn a World Championship bronze medal.

Anshu Malik won silver in the 57kg division, giving India its second medal of the World Championships. The 20-year-old put up a valiant performance but was defeated in the final by two-time Olympic medalist Helen Maroulis of the United States.

The Indian women have now surpassed their greatest ever performance at the World Championships, as Geeta Phogat Babita Phogat’s bronze medals in 2012 were the country’s best performance until Thursday.

Sarita startled the Swede with an early four-pointer and quickly added two more points with a take-down. By the break, the reigning Asian champion had a comfortable 6-0 lead and then pulled off another stunning move to sprint to an 8-0 lead.

She gave up a take-down late in the fight, but she had a large enough lead to win. It was her sixth try to win a global medal, having previously failed at one U-23 and four senior worlds.

Meanwhile, Divya Kakran (72kg) lost her repechage round to Mongolia’s Davaanasan Enkh Amar in the morning session, and the Greco Roman wrestlers put on a poor performance.
