Shubman Gill is given a reprieve after the ball strikes the Spidercam cable without first being caught by Ambati Rayudu

Shubman Gill was given a major reprieve during Kolkata Knight Riders’ high-pressure chase in the IPL 2021 Final in Dubai when his dismissal was overturned after the ball touched the spider cam cable. Gill was batting on 27 when he attempted a huge shot off Ravindra Jadeja’s third ball of the KKR innings’ 10th over. After hitting the toe-end of the bat, the ball flew high into the sky. Ambati Rayudu, fielding at midwicket, covered a lot of distance before finally taking a well-judged catch.

The CSK camp was ecstatic, but the situation quickly altered when the on-field umpires were spotted consulting the third umpire. It was evident after a few replays that the ball had clipped the spider cam cable. In such a situation, the delivery is ruled a dead ball, and the batsman’s dismissal is reversed.

That’s exactly what happened, as Gill was given another chance to chase down the massive CSK total. Things changed abruptly following the incident, with Shardul Thakur picking up the wickets of Venkatesh Iyer and Nitish Rana in the same over to propel CSK back into the contest. Sunil Narine was promoted to the top of the order to continue his big-hitting, but he, too, fell victim to Josh Hazlewood’s bowling.

Gill, on the other hand, failed to capitalise on the occasion, falling to Deepak Chahar for 51 off 43 balls in the 14th over.
