Virat “Winning as captain will be the cherry on top,” Gautam Gambhir says

The ICC T20 World Cup group stage is presently taking place in Oman and the United Arab Emirates, but cricket fans are looking forward to the Super 12 stage, which begins on October 23. India’s campaign will begin on October 24 against arch-rival Pakistan, with Afghanistan, New Zealand, and two qualifiers awaiting them in Group 2 of the Super 12 stage. The Indian squad is under a lot of pressure, as they are one of the favourites to win the tournament. India won the first T20 World Cup in 2007 but hasn’t been able to repeat the feat since. In 2014, they lost in the final, and in 2016, they ended in the semi-final.

Virat Kohli, who is captaining the squad for the first time in a T20 World Cup this year, will stand aside from the position after the tournament. After losing in the Champions Trophy final in 2017 and again in the ODI World Cup semi-finals in 2019, Kohli and the Indian team have been anxious for an ICC tournament victory.

MS Dhoni, who has joined the camp as a mentor, led India to their last ICC victory in 2013. India’s win percentage has risen dramatically since Kohli took over the team in all formats. However, they have yet to win a major tournament, and both the players and the fans are eager for a trophy.

During an appearance on host broadcaster Star Sports’ show FOLLOW THE BLUES, former India opener Gautam Gambhir commented about Kohli’s and the team’s desire.

“All he would want is to win the T20 competition, and I’m sure the rest of the team will want to do the same because it’s been a long 14 years,” Gambhir added.

“I’m sure it’s not just about Virat Kohli captaining India for the final time in the T20 format; it’s about winning the tournament, and him winning as captain will be frosting on the cake,” the 2007 World Twenty20 champion added.
